About Us

In the United States, the world of martial arts has been dominated for many years by a few styles - Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Aikido. However, one thing all of these styles have in common is their historical connection (lineage) to Ju-Jitsu. For example, Karate took the punches and kicks from Ju-Jitsu, Judo took the throws and hold-down techniques, and Aikido took many of the wrist locking techniques and Katana Katas; not forgetting Brazilian Ju-Jitsu which uses the ground techniques found in traditional Ju-Jitsu.

The Ju-Jitsu Center  teaches a syllabus based on that of the World Ju-Jitsu Federation (WJJF). The  syllabus is extensive and incorporates many of the techniques from the other styles, plus additional techniques for self defense and military use. Students of Ju-Jitsu will be challenged throughout the grades, up to and including Black Belt (Shodan). However, once a student has achieved the coveted Black Belt, he or she will find that Ju-Jitsu offers many more grades and challenges.

Sensei John Glimmerveen

Chief instructor, John Glimmerveen, is national level coach and holds a 2nd. dan (Nidan) black belt in Ju-Jitsu. He has studied Ju-Jitsu for over 30 years and trained under the highest ranking member of the World Ju-Jitsu Federation - Professor Robert Clark, Soke, 9th dan. - and many other highly respected instructors within the WJJF. He has attended many special courses and has trained with Canadian SWAT instructors and instructors of the British special forces, the SAS (Special Air Service). He has taught Ju-Jitsu classes in: the UK, Holland, Bermuda, and in Colorado, Wyoming and Georgia in the US.

The Ju-Jitsu Center of Richmond Hill offers classes in traditional Ju-Jitsu and weaponry. The center is unique in solely offering this style of martial art. Students will find the classes challenging but rewarding. Ju-Jitsu has an extensive syllabus making students very proud of every grade they achieve.
