A: Ju-Jitsu is an extensive martial art. Karate uses many of the punching and kicking techniques found in Ju Jitsu, Judo uses many of the grappling, throws and hold-down techniques used, Aikido uses many of the wrist throws and locking techniques and Tae Kwon Do uses many of the forms (kata) and weapon techniques, and Brazilian Ju-Jitsu uses many of the ground work and hold down techniques found in Ju-Jitsu. In addition, Ju-Jitsu techniques are used by many of the world’s Special Forces, Police departments, and in self defense training.
A: The techniques used in Ju-Jitsu are designed to use the opponent’s size and weight against him. Although fitness is a part of Ju-Jitsu training, and can be very strenuous, instruction is tailored to the individual (if you want a hard workout this is for you, if you want to progress gradually, this for you too). Most participants find an improvement in their fitness levels within the first month. (If you want to lose weight, that can be achieved too).
A: No.
The first week (3 classes) is free. These first classes give the individual a chance to sample Ju-Jitsu. After the 3 classes, students will be offered the chance to sign up for a monthly contract - depending on availability. Contracts are paid one month in advance. Some discounts are available, see class schedules and prices for more details.
A: Not for the introduction classes. You may wear any suitable clothing, such as track-suits, sweats or jeans and a ‘T’ shirt. All contracts include a registration fee, part of which is used to purchase a Gi.
A: We are pleased to say that it takes longer than most of the other martial arts. The syllabus is extensive and students must complete all grades to a high level of competence. If a student completes all grades in a timely manor, and to an acceptable level, a black belt can be achieved in approximately three years. Because it is so extensive, your sense of accomplishment will be unrivaled.
Generally, grading takes place every 3 to 4 months (depending on the grade level). Students will demonstrate all the techniques taught during classes - students must demonstrate a high level of competence in each technique before passing the grade.
A: All students start with a red belt (beginner), followed - after successfully grading by: white, yellow, orange, green, blue/white, blue, purple, brown/white, brown, black (1st. dan). The beginner to green belts covers all of the basic techniques, where as, the purple through black belts include more advanced techniques. As all black belt holders will confirm, learning really starts at the black belt level. Grades go all the way to 9th dan.
A: In the real world, yes, in the dojo, no! Many of the techniques used in Ju-Jitsu are practiced with a partner. Because of the effectiveness of the techniques, all students are trained to work within a compulsory degree of control. Although sparring is occasionally used in classes, heavy or uncontrolled contact will not be tolerated. Bullying inside the dojo or outside is not tolerated (anyone found to have been involved in bullying will be expelled). Although Ju-Jitsu can be used in an offensive manor, it is intended as a self defense, using a reasonable amount of force to protect ones self.
A: Yes and no. There are Ju-Jitsu competitions, but the techniques we learn at the Ju-Jitsu center are for the real world. They are short, sharp and extremely effective. We do not enter tournaments or competitions; we prefer to practice the art as it was intended.
A: If you have been graded in Ju-Jitsu at another club, Sensei Glimmerveen will discuss your individual status and examine your learning records before making a determination. However, all comers are welcome.
